Fast Simulation of a Voice-Data Multiplexer

چکیده
The determination of packet loss rates in multiplexers is an important problem that has received much attention in the literature. This paper considers the problem of estimating, via simulation, extremely low packet loss rates in a voice-data multiplexer. The multiplexer gives priority to voice packets, unless the data queue length exceeds a threshold. To eeciently simulate such low loss rates requires the proper use of importance sampling. In this paper we describe an importance sampling technique that is guaranteed to provide an exponential decrease in variance over standard simulation. This importance sampling technique has two phases, with a diierent importance sampling strategy in each phase. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the eeectiveness of this approach.

Traffic smoothing effects of bit dropping in a packet voice multiplexer
Recent studies have shown that the superposition of packet sequences generated by packetized voice sources with speech detection exhibit high burstiness due to inherent correlations between successive interarrival times in the superposition stream. In a packet voice multiplexer without bit dropping, these correlations tend to cause significantly larger queueing delays and packet losses than wou...
متن کاملA Markov Modulated Characterization of Packetized Voice and Data Traffic and Related Statistical Multiplexer Performance
We study the performance of a statistical multiplexer whose inputs consist of a superposition of packetized voice sources and data. The performance analysis predicts voice packet delay distributions, which usually have a stringent requirement, as well as data packet delay distributions. The superposition is approximated by a correlated Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP), which is chosen su...

متن کاملSuperposition of Interrupted Poisson Processes and Its Application to Packetized Voice Multiplexers
This paper analyzes a model of a statistical multiplexer for packetized voice. The packet arrival stream from a single voice source is approximated by an interrupted Poisson process (IPP). The multiplexer is modeled by a single-server queue with general service time distribution, whose input is superposition of independent and identical IPPs. The steady-state probabilities of this queueing syst...
